Waste Management (WM), a U.S. company, has recently added plastic and paper cups to its collection list, which will expand the scale of curbside recycling material collection. WM stated that recent automation upgrades in Material Recovery Facilities (MRFs) have made it easier to separate cups, thereby increasing the total collection volume from both economic and logistical perspectives. Additionally, the company claims that both types of cups are valuable recyclable materials, with an increasing number of downstream markets showing interest in them. Meanwhile, WM hopes other companies and municipal departments can also collaborate in collecting these two materials.
In fact, PP and paper cups had already entered the MRF before this, and now their official inclusion in the accepted recycling list is a measure to promote higher recycling volumes and cleaner material flows. WM has been upgrading MRFs nationwide, investing $1.4 billion between 2022 and 2026 to improve infrastructure and facilitate easier sorting.
Since 2019, WM's recycled PP has increased by 150%, with claims of growing demand in areas such as paint buckets, plastic fence posts, pallets, and plastic crates
